Workflow Manager Step Layout Options

Not all workflows start with one step, followed by additional tasks. There are times where multiple tasks need to be completed at the same time, or that specific tasks need to be completed before a new task is created. Salentica has created five Step Layouts that can be set up in Workflow Manager.

Linear Steps with Dependency

What does it do?

Linear Steps with Dependency means that Task 2 will not start until Task 1 is marked as complete.

How do I set this up?

  • Use Order to determine which Tasks should be completed first

  • Leave Start Next Step Immediately toggled to No (which is the default)

Example:

Linear Steps without Dependency

What does it do?

Linear Steps without Dependency means that Task 2 will start at the same time as Task 1. This is recommended if numerous Tasks need to be assigned out at once, where there are no subsequent dependencies.

How do I set this up?

  • You can use Order to set this up, using the same Order on all Tasks

  • Toggle Start Next Step Immediately to Yes

Example:

Branching Out to Parallel Steps with Dependency

What does it do?

Branching Out to Parallel Steps with Dependency means that Task 2 and Task 3 will NOT start until Task 1 is marked as complete. This is recommended if a single task need to be completed before kicking off the next two tasks.

How do I set this up?

  • Task 1 will have Order of 1 and Start Next Steps Immediately toggled to No

  • Task 2 & 3 can have the same Order on the tasks

Example:

Merge from Parallel Steps with Dependency

What does it do?

Merge from Parallel Steps with Dependency means that Task 3 will NOT start until Task 1 and Task 2 are marked as complete. This is recommended if two tasks need to be completed before kicking off the third task.

How do I set this up?

  • Task 1 and Task 2 will have the same Order number and Start Next Steps Immediately on both tasks should be toggled to No

Example:

Parallel Steps Dependent on Parallel Steps

What does it do?

Parallel Steps Dependent on Parallel Steps means that Task 3 and Task 4 will NOT start until Task 1 and Task 2 are marked as complete. This is recommended if two tasks need to be completed before kicking off the third and fourth tasks.

How do I set this up?

There are two ways to set this up.

Option 1:

  • Task 1 and Task 2 will have the same Order number & Task 3 and Task 4 will have the same Order number and Start Next Steps Immediately on both tasks should be toggled to No

Option 2:

  • Task 1: Order 1; and Start Next Steps Immediately: YES

  • Task 2: Order 2; and Start Next Steps Immediately: NO

AND

  • Task 3: Order 3; and Start Next Steps Immediately: YES
  • Task 4: Order 4;  and Start Next Steps Immediately: NO
